This condition could be caused by many factors. I will list a few of the most common ones here that should help you. First, when the roof cycles there are many timing and positional sensors throughout the system. If something does not signal properly in the allotted time, you will get an error.
The roof door module (RDM) monitors the folding top stowage compartment lid latch switch signal circuits at least once every 200 milliseconds. The retractable roof stowage compartment left and right lid latch switches are wired in series. The folding top stowage compartment lid latch switches are limit switches. When the stowage compartment lid is latched, the limit switches are active. When the limit switches are active, the RDM detects a switched ground signal.
Causes –
- If the RDM detects the folding top stowage compartment lid in the latched position and the folding top stowage compartment lid extend cylinder is fully extended.
- The RDM has performed a folding top stowage compartment lid down command for approximately 30 seconds and the RDM does not detect the folding top stowage compartment lid latched signal.
- An open or high resistance exists in the folding top stowage compartment lid latch switch signal circuit or ground circuit.
- An open, high resistance, or short to ground in the folding top valve 3 battery positive supply voltage circuit and folding top valve 3 control circuit.
- A short to ground in the IGN 0 supply voltage circuit to any valve, relay or motor on that circuit.
- An internally shorted to ground valve or pump motor relay on the IGN 0 supply voltage circuit.
Most common solutions –
- Wire loom near hinge on passenger side stowage compartment arm cutting into wire bundle or getting caught on nearby structure. Remove metal/plastic clips and wire ties on this wire bundle and inspect for wear or damaged wiring. Add cushioning to wires or replace bad sections and reattach ties so that they are snug but not overly stressing the cabling. Redirect loom so that it does not interfere with nearby structure.
- Insure proper hydraulic fluid level and that all lines are not binding, chaffing or in the way of obstructions when operating the roof system. Use wire ties with cushioning to keep cables and lines free of moving parts.
- Worn ignition switch. When the switch wears, voltage needed to operate systems becomes unreliable and could cause errors for the sensitive electronics. Replace.
- Dirty or dry hinge points. Clean polished surfaces of all pistons with dry cloth or cloth lightly lubed with silicone oil. Lube pivot areas of all roof hinges with high quality lithium grease. Do this for the area behind the seats and above the windshield for the latches. Cleaning and lubricating the mechanical parts of the system should be done at least yearly.
- Worn latch sensor above driver side in header latch area. Remove plastic cover, test and replace if needed.
